Next-Gen ‘Doom’ Reboot Looks Like One Hell of a Game

Easily the bloodiest and goriest game shown at E3 this summer, Doom is making its return next year. You know what I loved about Bethesda’s E3 press conference? … I loved everything about it. They kept our attention with every game they announced thus far. And Doom (unofficially known as Doom 4) definitely was a standout for me from the whole show.

Talk about a video game being a video game. It seems like a weird thing to say, but videogames evolved so much since the very first version of Doom that the characters and stories told can be on par with that of the best movies ever made. But Doom throws that out the window and gives us all those things every gamer really loves — badass demons, big effing guns, and moving really fast, to paraphrase id Software executive producer Marty Stratton.

Doom stays very close to the original game made decades ago. The fast pace and heavy action has transitioned well to a newer generation. From the moment Doomguy puts on that helmet we knew we were in for a treat. The fast pacing and heavy gore are more than welcomed returns. This game is definitely not for the squeamish. If you can’t handle chainsawing a Locust in half in Gears of War 3, you won’t be able to stomach what you can do in Doom with the melee execution system. For example, taking the demon’s head and splitting in half with your bare hands, or breaking off its leg and slamming its foot in its face, or taking said chainsaw and shredding said demons in half as they scream in agony, with a vast arsenal of weapons such as shotguns, plasma rifles, assault machine guns, and returning favorites such as the super shotgun, the chainsaw, and the infamous BFG 9000 (Or Big Fucking Gun 9000).

Also, fun fact, they want you to fight. There is no cover mechanic here or regenerable health. You can collect health and armor pick-ups throughout most levels, but be prepared to fight for it, as enemies will be just as unforgiving as in previous versions of the game.

What I am most excited for is the multiplayer aspects. Being made in conjunction with Certain Affinity, Doom’s multiplayer has the potential to be amazing. Traditional four-player Deathmatch, Domination, Freeze Tag, and Clan Arena game modes are available. Also with the “Doom SnapMap” players will be able to create their own maps, game modes and share their creations online with friends and other players.

Coming in 2016 to the Xbox One, PS4, and Microsoft Windows, I look forward to getting my hands on this game and kicking ass in Hell once again.
