One Piece Anime Cosplay Retrospective Gallery
It is Straw Hat Day in the world of weird unofficial “holidays.” There are undoubtedly many characters that are known for sporting a straw hat (Marceline from Adventure Time comes to mind) but no character is more associated with that type of headgear than one Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates.
The first photo I took of someone cosplaying as a character from One Piece was a decade ago in 2011 (the Nami and Sanji in the gallery), because the manga has been running without stop in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997. It only took two years for the anime adaptation to start and it has been running since 1999. For that reason, I’ve never actually watched the anime — way too deep a commitment for me. Well, to be honest, the art style of the manga and its very accurate representation in the anime made me think for years that One Piece was an anime for kids.
Once I learned more about the story I realized it had all the personal drama and trauma of the best dramatic anime shows, and was deeply, smartly, political. Still too many episodes for me to jump on board at this point, but at least I have had my misconceptions corrected.
