Gamescom Grabs Less Media Attention Than Usual

The last Gamescom was the most undercovered Gamescom in the last few years, despite the release of two new consoles this year: the Nintendo Switch and Microsoft’s Xbox One X. “This year’s edition of gamescom was relatively underwhelming when it comes to strong media beats (new games; high profile announcements; trailers on high expectation games) – and the media coverage would reflect this,” said Thomas Bidaux of ICO Partners, a European games industry consulting firm. He was quoted in the article linked below.

Olympics Looking at Sports Games For Possible E-sports Inclusion

E-sports are up for consideration for the Olympics as the Games tries to draw a younger audience, however violent video games are already banned. “We want to promote non-discrimination, non-violence, and peace among people. This doesn’t match with video games, which are about violence, explosions and killing. And there we have to draw a clear line,” Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, said in an interview with the South China Morning Post. This raises questions about what types of games will be allowed. Will popular competitive games such as DOTA 2 or League of Legends be considered at all, as they do contain violence? What about games with cartoon violence, like Overwatch? Bach has mentioned that “peaceful” games, such as FIFA or NBA, are of “high interest.”

New SF2 SNES Anniversary Cartridge May Destroy Your Console

In honor of Street Fighter’s 30th anniversary, Capcom worked with iam8bit to re-release Street Fighter 2 on the SNES. This re-release is an actual working cartridge, there are only 5,500 being produced and they are selling at the price point of $100, it also has the added feature of maybe catching fire in your SNES. A warning placed in tiny print toward the bottom of the iam8bit product page reads, “Use of this reproduction game cartridge (the “Product”) on the SNES gaming hardware may cause the SNES console to overheat or catch fire… so please exercise extreme caution when using the Product and make sure there is fire extinguishment (sic) equipment nearby.

Super Mario Maker Failstream Finally Beats His Own Level

After 480 hours of attempts, one Twitch streamer, Failstream, beat the insanely difficult “Final Flight” Super Mario Maker level. The creator of this level being none other than Failstream himself. When creating a level in Super Mario Maker, the creator has to beat their own level at least once before they are able to upload it, this is to prevent impossible levels from being put up for players. Having beaten the level, Failstream was finally able to upload the level for others to try it. Although it deserves repeating: it took the very creator of this level over 480 hours to beat it.
