In its second year as a four-day convention, PAX East seemed to have settled in to having a lighter attendance number on Thursday of the event than the traditional three days. Still, despite crowds being clearly smaller than any Friday, Saturday or Sunday in previous years, I managed to take more than 50 images of the awesome cosplayers that did don costumes on Day 1.

While the crowds, the panels and the parties were as on point as usual at PAX East, the show floor itself was rather less impressive. Many of the biggest studios or game distributor companies didn’t even have a presence this year. Even Gearbox, which used PAX East and the main theater at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on Thursday to reveal the trailer for Borderlands 3, had no booth on the show floor. And as it did last year, Bethesda Softworks held a sort of separate event in the Westin Waterfront Boston hotel (the one attached to the BCEC) called Bethesda Game Days, but no presence on the show floor.

On the other hand, Facebook Gaming had a large booth space, and Facebook subsidiary Oculus had two large booth spaces, trying to drum up support for VR games. In fact, the most exciting thing I saw on Thursday aside from the outstanding cosplayers, was the Maine-based rapper Spose exiting the BCEC late in the day, after what I hope was a fun day being a game nerd.

This year we have started a new way to present cosplay photo galleries. We have a Smugmug account and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to save money on hosting storage, and give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.

Among the cosplayers in this gallery are Labinnak & Mangoloo Cosplays, Carley Winn Cosplay, In the Long Run Designs, cosplay_fool, BNHPhotography, maplesaurcosplay, Black Cat Comics Cosplay, wasted_life_16, Glitch Cos, Natalie Fuinha Cosplay, instinctively.mee, SBG Cosplay, nicolamortte, JessilynCupcake Cosplay & Crafts, and many more.

To view the entire gallery, just click on the image below. If you are pictured in any of our galleries, feel free to download the images and use them non-commercially on social media, with appropriate credit.
