PAX East 2020 Thursday Gallery by FirstPerson Shooter
This past weekend, PAX East returned to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and despite concerns about the novel coronavirus that causes covid-19, it was again a busy, well-attended event.
While ReedPop hasn’t released attendance figures for PAX East 2020, it did seem that the effects of covid-19 concerns led to a very slight drop in crowd sizes. If so, it was undoubtedly because one of the effects was the reduced presence at the con — or altogether pull out, by Sony — from a few large gaming companies. We covered it in a previous article, but the basics are Capcom and Square Enix cancelled appearances by Japanese developers because of concerns about the novel coronavirus, which led to some panels being dropped. Capcom never had an exhibit hall booth, but Square Enix did, and that didn’t change. Sony, on the other hand, cancelled everything, including a large presence on the exhibit hall floor and demos of the upcoming and highly anticipated The Last of Us Part II.
Most of the attendees I spoke to at this PAX East said they still enjoyed the con quite a bit, despite the last-minute changes. And a number of them said they looked at more indie games than usual, which is a silver lining to the covid-19 fears, at least for those smaller game developers in the exhibit hall, in the Indie Megabooth and otherwise.
Even if the attendance numbers were lower than previous years, the popular games showing of new, playable content still had lines that stretched for hours. People reported to me that they waited for a few hours in a line to get a chance to play five minutes of some new game content. So in that regard, PAX East 2020 was no different than any other year.
Thursday, however, was noticeably less crowded than last year, and that is reflected in this first cosplay gallery from the convention. Among the cosplayers in this short gallery are misanthrobotic, pretty_nerdy_crystal, beckiface, maplesaurcosplay, spoopy_kitt, kuromicosplays, aloisthespider, Carley Winn Cosplay, Nimbus Grey Cosplay, bambooastronaut, teddysher, and many more.
We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
