To paraphrase Ray Davies: Where have all the good times gone?

With most of the major gaming companies sitting out this year and no exciting new releases to demo or play, PAX East felt a little…joyless. PAX seems to be transitioning from a video gaming-centric show to a more tabletop gaming focus. Perhaps as a result of that, there were fewer cosplayers, since tabletop has far fewer iconic characters to cosplay. That was our best guess while shooting photos with the cosplayers who were there.

That notwithstanding, PAX is always a great show to catch up with Boston friends, especially as the last big show around Boston was five months earlier. I had a chance to talk to people I only see rarely, talk shop, and geek out over how good the food truck chicken karaage was.

Shooting on site presents an opportunity to find creative environments for making pictures. This year, I opted to put cosplayers in a corner by the elevators, surrounding them with stainless steel and frosted glass panels. With the addition of colored gels, I was able to get a highly stylized neon-Tokyo look. I leaned into that heavily while editing, which makes for some truly stand-out images. Enjoy!
