Rabbit Story Bounds From Simple Concept to Complex Game
Welcome to Indie Spotlight! Today we’re taking a journey into an unusual world of friendship, emotions and carrots — in Rabbit Story.
Created by Viacheslav Bushuev, Rabbit Story is a point-and-click adventure told through a cast of talking animals. You play as Rabbit, a bunny who just missed his best friend Kitty’s birthday. You want to make it up to her by returning home with a special gift and talking your way out of it. Upon returning home, however, you discover that Kitty has inexplicably disappeared …with all of her belongings…
The story unfolds over a series of episodes, each adding a new layer of complexity to Rabbit’s dilemma. Early on, he meets Doggy in the woods, and together they cultivate a great friendship. And yet, Rabbit can’t quite get over his past with Kitty and continues to struggle between what and who he wants in his life.
Not much more can be said without giving away the experience. The journey is one that needs to be seen firsthand. Luckily, jumping into it is a piece of cake! Everything is controlled with the mouse; you click to walk around and play mini-games. These include multiple-choice science trivia, handheld gaming and even defending against ghosts! It’s an unusual combination of activities, but somehow they meld together cohesively to provide some fun interaction as you progress through Rabbit’s tale.
As an added challenge, carrots are hidden throughout the game that you can find and collect. Once you have found them all, a secret level is unlocked with a special ending!
Considering the colorful, youthful nature of the characters and environment, the story ends up being a surprisingly successful sample of the complexity of human relationships. You’ll find yourself reflecting on Rabbit’s decisions and wondering what you would have done instead. It’s a worthy title for anyone wanting a casual experience with a hefty side of mind-bogglery.
Rabbit Story is available on Steam.
