Review: Image Comics’ First Four Issues of MARA by Brian Wood and Ming Doyle
When we were introduced to Mara late last year, we were all given a beautifully created story about Mara, the extremely talented volleyball player. She’s beautiful, talented, smart, and everything someone would want.
As Mara’s story continues, we see her advance as a player, even to limits beyond human possibilities. Being caught on tape defying natural human ability, being caught on television as she ascends into the air, and being caught on camera as she’s shot. There was nothing she couldn’t handle.
However, when Mara is recruited by the army, and the world is told that she is dead, including her brother, Mara takes it upon herself to find her brother’s base and see him for herself. The army isn’t fully aware of her abilities at this point, and she’s able to make it to her brother’s base, without contact.
At the end of issue 4, we see Mara flying into space as she’s evaded the military that threatens to keep her as a weapon.
Who knows what is in store for Mara next, but you can read her story, and make your own conclusions. Mara is in comic book stores everywhere. Make sure to pick up issues 1-4 and enjoy!
