Super Smash Bros DLC: Here Comes New Challengers!
Super Smash Bros is easily one of the best games to come out in 2014, and a personal favorite of mine. It also helped keep the Wii U afloat a little longer before the NX is released. So it is only natural and more than welcome to see them come out with DLC for the game. And I am so excited for what they released.
Coming right off the bat was Mewtwo — the original Pokemon villain from the first movie, and one of the most powerful Pokemon in the series. He is also one of my favorite Pokemon, and fan requested returning character. His playstyle is very familiar to his Melee days, however he is a lot faster and heavy hitting in my book. If you played him in Project M, Mewtwo is almost exactly the same. And his Final Smash Psyshock is an easy K.O on his opposition.
Lucas from the EarthBound/Mother series is another returning character. To be honest I was never a Lucas fan. I didn’t really like his playstyle despite it being very reminiscent of Ness. I always prefer Ness. Maybe because I played him a lot in Smash 6, or maybe I just don’t appreciate Lucas since I never played Mother. Overall he is very similar to his Brawl style with a few new improvements to his gameplay style, and his Final Smash PK Starstorm is still very effective.
Another returning character from Melee is our boy Roy from Fire Emblem. Still as powerful as ever, he has easily become one of my favorite characters to play as. He is more about close range, heavy hitting damage compared to his Fire Emblem comrade Marth whose damage is at the tip of his blade. Also Roy’s moves use fire so more damage can be done overall. Roy didn’t have a final smash before but in this game the Critical Hit Final Smash he is given is possibly one of the strongest.
Last up, here comes a new character! Ryu from the Street Fighter series. I still can’t believe he is an actual character. So much detail and attention went into his overall design. His hits sound like the actual hit effects from the Street Fighter series. Even when you perfect block an attack you will hear the sound of a parry block from Street Fighter 3. His inputs allow for different varieties of moves due to how long you press a button. You can even use fighting game motions to uses his special moves such as the Hadoken, Tsumaki Senpukaku, and Shoryuken. He is meant to deal out combos reminiscent of his Street Fighter combos. Ryu is also the only character to have two Final Smashes. If you are far from your enemies he will use the Shinku Hadoken, and if you are up close you’ll dish out the Shin Shoryuken which is insanely powerful and can K.O an opponent easily.
Also along with these characters came new stages, and Mii costumes. I love the return of certain Super Smash Bros 64 stages like Hyrule Castle, Dreamland, and Mushroom Kingdom. Also new stages like Miiverse, which has user-generated drawings that will appear in the background, and my favorite new stage, Suzaku Castle from Street Fighter 2, which has the original SF2 soundtrack themes for Ryu and Ken as well as remixes for it. Each stage has its own gimmicks and all have Omega mode variations.
I honestly do not care for the Mii Fighters. However I gotta admit seeing Megaman, Protoman, and Zero costumes made me really happy. Not to mention having special costumes for certain fighting game characters such as Akira and Jackie from Virtua Fighter, and Heihachi from Tekken. Also Splatoon and Animal Crossing costumes are added as well, along with new trophies too.
I highly recommend purchasing these if you haven’t already. I am actually impressed with the amount of content that Super Smash Bros has after almost a full year since its launch. Personally I hope they keep on supporting the title and even adding in new characters, stages, and more content. I am still hopeful to see Bayonetta make an appearance in the game, and I look forward to seeing what else they have in store, especially with the Amiibo craze going on.
