The Avengers: Doomsday Announcement – Who’s In It & Who Isn’t

I forgot about it and was napping while Marvel Studios announced the cast (so far) for the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday — which was fine because the announcement would have put me to sleep anyway.

Seriously, Marvel marketing team, who thought it was a good idea to make the announcement video just 5 hours and 27 minutes of scrolling and holding on the backs of chairs?

Anyway, joining the already announced Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom will be, in order of chair appearance, Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum and Pedro Pascal. The only name I didn’t immediately recognize in that lengthy list is Lewis Pullman, who will play Sentry in the upcoming Thunderbolts*.

The hero teams include all of the Fantastic Four, most of the Thunderbolts with the exception of Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster), and much of the Fox-era cast of the X-Men movies. Knowing how much Alan Cumming has stated he hated the makeup for Nightcrawler, I assume both he and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique will be done as motion capture CG, like Mark Ruffalo’s the Hulk. And that starts our “not appearing in this film” (yet) segment. No Ruffalo.

No Benedict Cumberbatch, so no Doctor Strange. No Tom Holland, so no Spider-Man. No Don Cheadle, so no War Machine. No Brie Larson, so no Captain Marvel. None of the cast of The Eternals, and no Mahershala Ali, so no Blade. Neither Jeremy Renner nor Hailee Steinfeld, so neither Hawkeye.

In fact, none of the younger heroes are named in the announcement as being part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. No Iman Vellani, so no Ms. Marvel. No Kathryn Newton, so no Cassie Lang; no Joe Locke, so no Billy Maximoff; no Elijah Richardson, so no Eli Bradley, no Xochitl Gomez, so no America Chavez. I hope this doesn’t mean Kevin Feige has given up on the idea of something inspired by the Young Avengers comics.

It is likely that many of those listed above as not announced yet are just waiting for final contract deals to be signed. But it’s also likely they simply won’t be included in Marvel’s post-Doomsday plans. And, before you start your nearly full day watch of the announcement video embedded below (seriously, fast forward a lot), consider this question: Why Winston Duke? I’m really glad to see him again, but does that mean we might be getting another Black Panther change?

(Update: If you don’t want to zip through the 5+ hour version below, Marvel Studios released this under two minute version.
