Chances are if you watch anime or even play some video games that are heavily influenced by Japanese culture, you have seen steamed pork buns, or nikuman as it is known in Japanese. Steamed pork buns are very common food not just in Japan but throughout Southeast Asia, and is a very simple food to make. In Japan, they are most commonly known as a street food, street food being ready to eat food that is usually sold in carts or stands. Although as I mentioned earlier, steamed buns aren’t exclusive to Japan, but throughout Southeast Asia with differences depending on where you are. For example, Malaysia is a pronominally Muslim nation, so you won’t find steamed buns with pork in them. The video below will show you how to make steamed buns. In this video, Jae Kabinov and his assistant Rissa will show you how to make them Cambodian style.

Recipe

2 Cups Flour

1 Egg

½ teaspoon salt

Water as needed

1. Lightly oil a large bowl

2. Add the flour in a separate bowl and make a well in the center of the flour

3. Add your egg and salt and mix together

4. Add water as needed. Just add a little bit at a time. If you did this right, it should look like dough. If you added too much water, then it will turn out like batter and you will need to start over!
