The Mike McKone Interview & Avengers Academy #1 & #2 Review

I’ll be honest to say that I didn’t like Christos Gage’s work in Avengers: The Initiative. Dan Slott, who wrote it and later co-wrote it with Gage, has a unique writing style which combines action, humor and a strong familiarity with continuity in the Marvel Universe that makes his comic books such a fun read. When Gage came to write the series fully, the change of style and characterization was so startling that I couldn’t continue reading the series anymore. It almost felt like Gage worked hard to emulate his style to what was previous written but it did not mesh well.

However, I’m really enjoying so far with what Gage has done with Avengers Academy. Without giving too much away, the twist and turns that he has revealed and the complexity of these new characters makes this book so much better than Bendis’ two Avengers books combined.

If I may mouth off for a bit now that I’ve brought Bendis’ name into this review, why does Bendis’ hate Avengers continuity so much? Before Bendis’ starting writing the Avengers books Scarlet Witch was a mutant and The Beyonder was all-powerful being and now it’s reversed.

Does anybody really buy it that Loki would sacrifice himself at the end of Siege to save the Avengers? Really Bendis? Really?

Back to the article, if you want a good, fun Avengers books to read, check out Avengers Academy. Also, if you feel that is not your cup of tea, Brubaker’s Secret Avengers might be more to your liking. The first two issues combine spy mystery with space adventure and is able to make it work.
