The Steampunk Demon of Templecon 2013

Editor’s Note: These photos were taken at Templecon 2013 by the amazing Red Zebra Photography. I asked Midge if she would be willing to share about the design of her “Steampunk Demon” creation.

Hi! My name is Midge Scully and I’m an aspiring illustrator with a passion for all things creative.

The costume I wore to Templecon 2013 was an original design of mine which took a total of one night to construct.

Specifically, I designed/made the armor, horns, gold handcuffs, leather armbands, fur pieces and leather leg holsters. Everything else on the costume I bought from numerous stores.

The costume itself is a Demon design that I wanted to have a Steampunk meets Barbarian feel to it, which I tried incorporating/portraying in the armor, horns and leather accessories. I wanted to do something steampunk originally but then wondered how I could make it more unique/stand alone than the all too common goggles and gears thrown on a neo-victorian outfit. So I decided to challenge myself and attempt making armor, which I had never done before. I then thought about how I could push the limitations of what steampunk can be even further and decided upon making the character a demon. As I made the horns, I noticed how they were looking like cat ears, which made me think of incorporating fur. As I designed it with fur, the idea of adding a barbarian/warrior struck me, and slowly the designed evolved into the final product. The finished costume reflects many of my different interests; combining them into a genre bending original character.
