Top Picks for Free Comic Book Day 2015
Another Free Comic Book Day has come and there were quite a few juicy tidbits for upcoming events from various comic book companies, from Marvel to Archie Comics.
For the uninitiated, Free Comic Book Day is where various companies give out teaser issues of established comic storylines or preview comics of upcoming events to bring in new readers.
I picked up a few interesting titles that you might want to check out once they officially hit the shelves. I will be going over my top five picks, and since I don’t want to ruin the stories for anyone who hasn’t read them yet I will avoid any spoilers.
- Divergence #1 (DC Comics)
With the events of New 52 and Convergence seemingly coming to a close, the cities of Gotham and Metropolis as well as the island of Themascyra have lost their patron heroes, either literally or figuratively. But that’s not all — one of the Amazon warriors has visions of these events and worse to come due to a daughter of the Amazons who is also Darkseid’s illegitimate daughter. All that we know for sure is that whatever her endgame is, it spells trouble for the DC multiverse.
- Sonic the Hedgehog/Mega Man World’s Unite Prelude (Archie Comics)
While both titles have seemed to fallen into obscurity in the gaming community, Archie comics has done some amazing things with the Sonic and Mega Man licenses. Back in 2013, a major crossover took place between the 2 titles called Worlds Collide, where Sonic and Mega Man team up to save both of their worlds from the combined scientific might of Doctors Eggman and Wily. This time around, the worlds of Sonic BOOM and Mega Man X will be joining in for the sequel crossover, Worlds Unite. In the Mega Man side of the double header, we have the Blue Bomber recounting his latest scuffle with an anti-robot terrorist named Xander Payne. After escaping to and returning from the year 20XX, he’s gone off the deep end, and swears has foreseen the downfall of Mega Man and mysterious Blue Hedgehog.
Meanwhile on the Sonic side of things, the Blue Blur and his arch nemesis Dr. Eggman, are racing to collect the Chaos Emeralds, when a giant portal randomly unleashes a magma monster, that attacks them both. After Silver the Hedgehog drops in to assist our hero, he explains that the portal that opened up randomly is called a Genesis Portal, and (unbeknownst to them) is partially connected to the events of the Worlds Collide story arc, from 2013. Unfortunately, Eggman is now aware of the Genesis portal as well, and since he has no issue with screwing up the space-time continuum to achieve his own ends, this can only mean big trouble.
- All New All Different Avengers/Uncanny Inhumans (Marvel Comics)
The storyline in both titles takes place after the events of the new Secret War crossover. In the Avengers, we have the more seasoned vets, Vision, Captain America (Sam Wilson), (Female) Thor, and (Not Tony Stark) Iron Man doing some on the job training with Spider Man (Miles Morales), Nova (Sam Alexander), and Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), when they encounter a new incarnation of the Radioactive Man. In the Inhumans, Medusa and the Human Torch lead a new team to battle Hydra soldiers who have been rounding up newly exposed Terrigen Inhumans. The stories in these a short as they are meant to be intros, so keep that in mind when reading them.
- Secret Wars #0 (Marvel Comics)
Every event since Infinity has been building up to this, the Marvel Multiverse is at War, and it looks like there will be many casualties as members of the Future Foundation discuss their evacuation plan. This doesn’t set well with certain members, as they ask why they aren’t fighting the end of the world, which leads to a bit of exposition from the children of Reed Richards. Days past, and by the end of the issue we see that their plan was for naught, the war has begun. Also readers are given an official print version of the Attack on Titan/Marvel crossover called Attack on Avengers.
- Fight Club (Dark Horse Comics)
This one is strictly for fans of the movie, as it is a sequel to the film, and without spoiling too much I will say on this, Tyler Durden is back! That alone should make this book one to pick up. The artwork reflects the grittiness of the film, but feels unique to itself. I can’t recommend this book enough, so please keep your ear to the ground for it.
And those are my picks, I hope I piqued to your interest a little, and please support the official releases of these previews.
