What Was I Thinking? Nerd Caliber Gets an Editor in Chief

Howdy everybody. I would like to introduced myself, describe a bit of my background, the way I work and some of my ideas for the future of Nerd Caliber.

But before that let me assure you that Emmanuel isn’t going anywhere, except a bit further away from the daily content grind. He is still the boss of us, and will still be the main video expert for the site. So, why then, you may wonder, would I agree to take on that grind?

I have been working at least part-time in journalism since 1980, and full-time as an editor since 1995. I have worked at a daily regional paper as the editor of the front-page section, at a business focused weekly, and as the news editor for the online version of that technology business weekly. Now I am editor in chief of a couple of niche technology sites under the umbrella of the enormous business media conglomerate, UBM.

But all of that is not the real reason why I am very excited about this opportunity. I am a nerd. I played the game that inspired Gary Gygax, called “Empire of the Petal Throne.” I bought my first Dungeons & Dragons book before it was “Advanced” and when it was printed as a 5×7 pamphlet.

The first comic book I read was a Dr.Strange issue from 1968, and over the years I collected enough so that, even after ants ate about half of them in storage, I was able to buy a car when I sold the collection in the late 1980s. I play videogames, read science fiction and fantasy, watch Nova on PBS and generally nerd out pretty hard.

Now, most of you may know me from my cosplay photography and I don’t plan to stop doing that, or even backing off at all. But photography has only ever been a hobby or sideline business for me — words, not pictures have been my stock in trade.

These days, however, words alone don’t even come close to cutting it online, so I intend to continue the trend Emmanuel started with more video, more photos and more interactivity. Exactly how that will look is still a work in progress and I very much look forward to all sorts of great suggestions from all of you. We may only be limited by imagination.

So please bear with me as I get up to speed, but also please ask me anything, as we get ready for the next stage of NerdCaliber.
