Which Movies in 2025 Do You Want Most To See?
The theatrical movie industry continued its post-pandemic (or late stage-pandemic if you prefer) recovery in 2024, despite what many in the nerd commentary industry said about the pending death of Marvel (or Disney, or Sony or … ’twas ever thus). Sure, studios had to do some further soul searching, which led to some surprise release changes in 2024, such as Moana 2 going from a Disney+ series to a theatrical release — to its detriment in the eyes of many. But overall, the trend was toward more movies getting theatrical releases than in the previous two years.
Which is why I’m surprised that this list is shorter than last year’s list. Like last year, it only includes planned theatrical releases, not movies coming to streaming directly. So, not on the list are Star Trek: Section 31 (Paramount+); Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Netflix); The Gorge (AppleTV+) and likely more. I understand that this continues to be a rebuilding year for Marvel, and that Sony has essentially killed any current plans for Spider-Man IP movies, retooling to ideally stop making stinkers. But the lesser number of nerd movies coming in 2025 is concerning, if it continues to be a trend.
