Wicked Comic Con 2023 Sunday Gallery By FirstPerson Shooter, Part 1
If you have looked at the previous galleries from Wicked Comic Con 2023 you may wonder why the lighting has, yet again, changed. That’s because I realized I still wasn’t happy with the way the lighting looked, even after I figured out that only one flash showed up when shooting at a high-speed sync shutter speed.
Since the rim light was a flash in a shoot-through umbrella, all of the light was spreading out in a dome from the, well, dome-shaped umbrella. That meant that a lof of the light that I wanted to just hit the cosplayer was lighting up the backdrop. The same was true of the floor-stationed blue key light — blue light was hitting the backdrop from the opposite side from the rim light.
I realized I could just bring a different light modifier on Sunday, even a regular umbrella. But one of my goals was to reduce the amount of gear I had to bring to and from the Hynes Convention Center, so no bag I had would have enough space for even a single umbrella spare. So I came up with the most ratchet solution possible, one that surprised even me.
Grabbing one of the handful of never-worn black t-shirts that are too small I have acquired over the years as giveaways at cons, I brought it to the con and draped it over the side facing the backdrop, creating the jankiest barn door imaginable. Then I used a couple of business cards taped to the top and backdrop side of the blue key light to keep the light off the backdrop. Viola, trash light modifier worked.
Among the cosplayers in this first of two Sunday galleries are Zombie Leader, WaterDragondesign, viqueens_cosplays, Ani-Mia, Redfield design, sarkazm2112, Lunsum, liztalkcosplay, ashesdaphoenix, magpieeee__, mellowvvi, magicalgirlgore, arcaneskeptic, crusty.cosplay, vahlance, rebel_princess_cosplay, missnikkimuffin, bostonpahtee, aeons_on_saturn, k1ttvcosplays, yukis.pinky.toe, and many more.
