So, how was Wicked Comic Con‘s return to the Westin in 2024? Overall, it seemed to be a positive change from the convention’s one-year side trip to the Hynes Convention Center. Attendance seemed to be up a bit although I don’t have actual numbers and it’s pretty tough to gauge crowd sizes between two completely different facilities. I did take about 10 percent more photos this year than last, which is about the only real metric I can use.

Expanding into both basement level event spaces at the Westin this year was another good sign of growth. In its first year, 2022, Wicked Comic Con already had enough comic industry guests to fill up all event spaces in the Grand Ballroom level of the Westin, so the expansion to the other side was pretty much a guarantee. I predict it will fill up all event spaces. as Arisia currently does, in no more than five years.

One thing that may have kept the convention from growing even faster this year was the date. In its first two years, Wicked Comic Con was held in April. But because of scheduling changes for nearly all conventions in Boston as downstream effects of the interior work being done to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, it had to choose a different time of year, and I was told August was the best of a bunch of bad choices. As I mentioned before, mid-August puts the convention in competition for attention and attendance dollars with big-name cons such as Otakon, DragonCon, AnimeNYC, and New England cons like Terrificon in Connecticut and PopCult Anime Con in Waltham, Mass. (where we’ll have the studio set up there again this year, Aug. 24-25).

Another possible effect of the date change may have been vendor and artists sales. Some of the artists I spoke to, and vendors I overheard, described their sales last weekend as “OK.” In contrast, in 2022, most of my artist and comic industry friends told me they sold out of stock they brought, having a great sales day. To be clear, “OK” does not mean “bad.” I’ve heard those friends talk about cons where it was barely worth showing up, and that definitely wasn’t the way they described this Wicked Comic Con. Also, this past weekend, one of the charity fundraising booths, Zombie Leader, had one of the best weekends they’ve ever had, raising more than $1,300 for the Lustgarten Foundation to fight pancreatic cancer.
