Will Your Interest Die Like Every Character In ‘Vidar’?
Welcome to Indie Spotlight!
Today we’re checking out a game that makes a full 180 on the norm — Vidar!
Vidar is an RPG puzzler where everyone dies. Yep, you read that right. You are an unnamed stranger that finds his way into a town on the brink of destruction. You take it upon yourself to help the villagers fight against the Beast that threatens your existence.
Stylistically, Vidar brings back the days of SNES RPGs like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger with animated 2D pixel art. It is also accompanied by custom narration and musical pieces that set a very somber yet exciting atmosphere for the player.
What makes Vidar stand out from the rest, however, is that practically everything is random. Yes, every cave you visit, every puzzle you conquer is like no other. Every day a different person or part of the village meets its end and affects what and how you can proceed. In one playthrough, you might lose your priest on the first night, and the church is no longer available to you. In another, the blacksmith doesn’t make it and you have less equipment to get started. Each time the entire story takes on a different form as you find a way to survive.
I had the pleasure of meeting Vidar‘s game designer Dean Razavi during my little adventure at MAGFest 13. He and his team have been hard at work putting together this unique title and are very excited to bring their creation to you!
Most importantly: Vidar is live on kickstarter right now — the campaign ends Thursday 2/26 at midnight. If you want to support Vidar and get some early access, back them now! It is also pushing its way through Steam Greenlight.
Vidar will be available on all PC platforms (with demos available now).
