Witchy Cosplay For Halloween 2024
When the leaves start to turn colors here in New England, what more appropriate a seasonal cosplay shoot than a witch in a cemetery?
Last week I was joined by Nicky of riddleyleenick for a cosplay (or perhaps more accurate to say costume, since she isn’t portraying a specific witch character) photo shoot late in the afternoon at a large cemetery in the Metro West suburbs of Boston. Nicky is a fun, nerdy woman in her early 50s, who I have known since 2014 when we met at the NH Renaissance Faire. She was in pirate garb, trooping with a pirate group doing charity fundraising work. I saw her a few times over the next few years, but then didn’t see her at cons or events for a while.
The reason was, I eventually found out when she got back into cosplay and conventions, was that she was still dealing with the effects of not one, but two accidents over the course of two years that left her with both damage to her body and traumatic brain injury. Despite having to deal with all of that, Nicky started going back to conventions, as best she could. Yes, there were some cons at which she spent a short time in the crowds, and often wearing thick, dark sunglasses to reduce the chance of lights triggering a debilitating headache. But that wasn’t going to completely keep her from doing what she loves.
Nicky has been working on her positivity, growing in the confidence that she can still cosplay, even if she still has to be a bit more cautious about crowds and stimulus than she used to. To call her inspiring is an understatement. I would never want to have to deal with what Nicky went and is going through, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be that strong.
